Accessories

Tie, cbund, vest, shirt, gloves, hat, shoes, pocket square, studs, cufflinks, cane, socks, suspenders, or ascots.

 Armbands

An elastic band worn on the upper arm, over the shirt sleeve to shorten the sleeve.

 

Ascot

A tie with broad ends hanging from a knot.  Usually secured with a decorative pin.

 Banded Collar Shirt

A tuxedo shirt with no collar.  Worn with a button cover or collar band.  Can also be referred to as a Mandarin Collar.

 Barrel Sleeve

The end of a jacket sleeve has a cuff that is unfolded and fastened with a button.

 Besom Pockets

A self fabric or satin strip on the top of a pocket.

 Black Tie

A term used for formal evening attire.  This usually means appropriate attire would be a black tuxedo.

 Button Cover

A decorative accessory worn over the top button of a shirt.  A button cover is usually worn on a banded collar shirt.

 Boutonniere

A flower worn on the left lapel of a jacket.

 Bow Tie

A tie that is either pre-tied or self-tied, which is worn around the collar of a formal wear shirt.

 Cane

A formal stick worn with a tuxedo or tail coat and a top hat.  Traditionally the cane would match the top hat.

 Collar Extender

A little plastic button with a loop that attaches to the top button of the shirt to add more room in the neck, making the shirt more comfortable.

 Cufflinks

A decorative accessory that keeps a shirt cuff closed instead of using a button.  Cufflinks require a shirt with a French cuff or Convertible cuff.

Cummerbund

A broad sash worn over the waistband of the pants.  A cummerbund is always worn with the pleats facing up.

 Cutaway (also known as a Morning Coat)

A cutaway is a  long jacket with no satin.  This type of jacket has a rounded off bottom.  A cutaway is typically worn in the daytime, for very formal weddings.

 Dinner Jacket

This type of jacket is usually a white or ivory shawl collar jacket.  It can be a single or double breasted jacket and is always worn with black pants.

 Double Breasted

A tuxedo jacket that overlaps itself in the front.  It usually has 4 or 6 buttons and is always worn closed.

 Flap Pocket

This is a standard pocket.  It is usually self fabric, with a flap over the pocket opening.

 Formal Shoe

This shoe is always patent leather or a patent leather look.

 Four In Hand Tie

This is a neck tie fastened with a slip knot.

 French Cuff

A shirt cuff that is double folded and always requires a cufflink.

 Full Dress

Also known as White Tie.  This attire includes black tails, black pants, a white pique wing tip shirt, white pique tie and vest, and formal shoes.

 Gloves

Gloves are usually made of cotton or nylon.  White gloves are worn with Full Dress or White Tie attire.

 Laydown Shirt

This is a tuxedo shirt with a regular collar, similar to a business style dress shirt, and a pleated front.

 Notch Lapel

This type of lapel has a notch cut between the collar and the lapel.

 Pique

A waffle like texture on a shirt, tie, or vest.  This is the most formal look.

 Pocket Square

This is a hankie or piece of material put in the breast pocket of the jacket to accessorize the coat.  It is usually white or matches the color of the tie and vest/cbund.

 Satin Fabric

A soft lustrous fabric, usually on the top collar, lapels, buttons, and down the outside seam of the pants.  Many ties, cbunds, and vests are also made of satin. (note: satin is a weave, not a fabric type)

 Scarf

Is a long piece of fabric worn around the neck that matches the accessories.  A scarf is worn over a jacket and under the collar.

 Self Fabric

This means that it is the same fabric as the jacket or pants.

 Shawl Lapel

This is a smooth collar and lapel that is a curved piece extending to the bottom of the lapel with no change from the collar to the lapel.

 Single Breasted

This jacket has 1 to 6 buttons down the front and can be worn buttoned or unbuttoned.

 Spats

A short formal fabric shoe covering worn over the instep and reaching just above the ankle.  Spats are fastened by a strap under the foot and buttons on the side.

 Stroller

A daytime jacket with no satin.

 Studs

Studs are worn down the front of a formal shirt instead of buttons.

 Suspenders

Suspenders are attached to the front and back of the waistband with clips or buttons to hold pants in their proper place.  They can also be called braces.

 Top Hat

This is a very formal hat made of wool or felt.  Usually worn with a matching cane.

 Tuxedo Pants

All formal tuxedo pants have a stin stripe down the outside seam.

 Vent

A vent is an opening in the back of the jacket or on each side of the jacket.

 Vest

A vest is worn instead of a cummerbund.  A vest can be backless or have a full back.

 Wing Collared ShirtA wing collared shirt is a shirt with a wing like pointed collar and a pleated front.  The wings are usually worn behind the tie.
